The University has given paramount importance to various sports activities. The Department of Sports of Tumkur University is actively involved in conducting various sports activities for the students of Graduate Courses, B.Ed. Course and Post-Graduate courses of Tumkur University and its affiliated colleges. The major activities of the Sports Department throughout the year are to conduct various sports events at inter-collegiate level of the University and select the students for competitions to be held at various Inter-Universities at National level. Apart from this, the Department also conducts inter departmental sports meet to the Post Graduate students of the University and teaching and non-teaching staffs. The Department also celebrates the National Sports Day on August 29th of every year.
Inter-Collegiate Level Competitions:
The main aim of conducting the inter-collegiate completion is to select the best sportsman to participate at National inter-University level competitions. During each academic year, the University conducts various Inter-collegiate competitions for Men and Women in various tournaments in various disciplines. Best two best performers in individual events are selected for Inter-University level competitions. In addition, a team of best performers is selected for Inter-University level competitions. These events are held in various affiliated colleges of the University. Each college has been given the charge of conducting one event in the academic year. Various students actively participate in the events conducted by the University. The students are given intense training in respective games by the Physical directors/trained coaches of various affiliated colleges so as to help them perform well in the national level competitions. First aid, drinking water and basic medical facility are provided to the students during the events. The University sponsors students to encourage them to participate in national level competitions.
Inter-University Level Competitions:
Selected players and teams at inter-collegiate level represent the Tumkur University at Inter-University national level competitions. Our University Men’s and Women’s teams have participated in various Tournaments conducted by various Universities across the country. The university sponsors students to encourage them to participate in national level competitions. It is with great pride that we like to mention that the University is the only university in the whole State to provide highest daily allowances to students. They are being equipped with Blazers, Track Suits and Playing Kit. This has acted as an impetus for our Rural Students to participate and excel in sports.
Post -Graduation inter-Departmental Sports Meet:
Sports and athletics have been an integral part of Tumkur University. The Physical Education Department of Tumkur University conducts Post-Graduate level Inter-Departmental (men and women; indoor and outdoor) Annual Sports in the month of April each academic year at the University sports ground. The students of various departments participate in Athletics, indoor games and outdoor games. Both girls and boys actively participate and win several prizes. In addition, the Physical Education Department of Tumkur University organizes Carom, Chess and cricket match for both teaching and non-teaching faculty members.
Other Activities
Further, the Department observes and helps in organizing Independence Day, Gandhi Jayanti, Lalbahadur Shastri Jayanti, and Republic Day celebrations. The University conducts International Yoga Day, on 21st June every year. The National Sports Day is observed on 29th August every year and coincides with the birthday of legendary hockey Olympian, Dhyan Chand Singh.
