Language Lab and Communication Skill Unit

 

Language is a medium of communication and it implies carrying of message or receiving of message. Therefore, the demand for training in linguistic skills is increasing in the globalized world. In the higher education, professional development and command in language are vital to meet the global demand.  The language teaching in the public and private universities is considered as an investment which directly influences the student’s integration into the global market, as well as the quality, reliability and the status of the University.

 

In the current scenario, English is considered the primary prerequisite qualification for employment. Tumkur University is a state University, with 20 postgraduate and certificate courses, as well as 1500 students with rural background. Most of the students of the University are from families with low socioeconomic status. It certainly affects academic performance of students, including physical and mental health.

 

Tumkur is now being an industrial corridor, large number of industries have been set up and more number of industries are expected to come up, which provides ample opportunity to the students (stake holders) of Tumkur University. Most of the industrial companies/ organizations encourage English communication in the workplace and expect their staff to be proficient in English. Therefore, the priority of this center is to find an innovative educational solution through an effective methodology to improve the English communication skills for the post-graduate students.

 

The center is providing a very intuitive platform for the students and the faculty members of the university. It incorporates tools which allow both teachers and students to create groups, assign tutors, respond to queries, correct and evaluate exercises, as well as create reports to carry out detailed monitoring of the progress of each student.

 

The center is also a platform for multi-device learning, which also allows students to create conversation groups between classmates, thus facilitating collaborative learning as a learning support in the language laboratory.

LANGUAGE LAB

Objectives

  • Self-learning: The student progresses in a self-guided but structured and progressive training to achieve the goals and objective set by the unit.
  • Complimentary: Language labs allow students to reinforce material learned in class by putting them into practice through interactive activities.
  • Monitoring and Evaluation: Teachers know the progress of each student and receive reports of strengths and weaknesses to better adapt the classroom activities.
