Skills and knowledge are the driving forces of economic growth and social development of a country. In rapidly growing economies like India with an increasing population, there is a severe scarcity of highly-trained, quality skilled resources. In addition, large sections of the Indian population possess little or no job skills. Keeping these facts in mind, Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) has been formed in 2015 to enhance employability of the youth of India through Skill Development.
In the recent times, prospective employers are looking at the value and expertise of a candidate from the view point of employability of the candidate along with his academic qualification. Furthermore, the industry/organization has neither the time nor inclination to train a fresher in the required skills. Owing to tough competitions, the industry always prefers to recruit only skilled students who can contribute instantly to the welfare of the company/organization.
Therefore, the curriculum is being modified based on the needs of industry and insisting the students to expose themselves to real workplace culture by organizing training programmes, project work and field trips. To achieve the set goals, a sustainable platform has been created to groom the skills of students and provide the support each student needs for his growth.
Skill Development Centre established at Tumkur University focuses on the development of entrepreneurial skills to raise income as well as improving employment opportunity in industrial sector and allied fields. The emphasis is given to equip the youth with knowledge, practical skills and its applications. All the skill development programmes are planned, monitored, and assessed by Co-ordinator, Skill Development Unit, Tumkur University.
